Cagar Biosfer Giam Siak Kecil-Bukit Batu
Cagar Biosfer Giam Siak Kecil-Bukit Batu yang terletak di pesisir timur pulau Sumatera ini merupakan salah satu bentang lahan yang oleh para ahli biologi dan ekologi diidentifikasi sebagai sebuah kawasan yang memiliki keanekaragaman hayati yang tinggi dengan 159 jenis burung, 10 jenis mamalia, 13 jenis ikan, 8 jenis reptil berikut 52 jenis tumbuhan langka dan dilindungi. Dengan luas 705.270 hektar, keberadaan Cagar Biosfer GSK-BB telah ditetapkan sebagai satu dari 553 cagar biosfer yang tersebar di 124 negara oleh UNESCO dan tergabung dalam “UNESCO`s World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR)” dan berpotensi untuk dikembangkan sebagai Desa Wisata.
Giam Siak Kecil – Bukit Batu Sanctuary located in eastern sumatera coastal area, which biologist and ecologist have identified valuable biodiversity with 159 species of birds, 10 species of mammals, 13 species of fish, 8 species of reptiles and also 52 species of rare and protected plants. It covers 705.270 hectares, the existence of GSK –BB Sanctuary had been defined as ones of 533 wild life sanctuary spread in 124 countries and attached to UNESCO`s World Network of Biosphere reserves ( WNBR ) and has potential to become tourism area.
Sarang burung walet terbuat dari air liur burung yang mengeras, dan berfungsi sebagai makanan lezat penambah stamina yang terkenal di Asia tenggara, dan juga di China dan Hongkong. Ada beberapa spesies burung walet di Bengkalis. Masyarakat lokal menggunakan lantai atas rumah mereka untuk burung walet membuat sarang untuk dijual. Walet memasuki rumah melalui lubang besar di lantai atas, dan walet walet itu selalu kembali memasuki rumah yang sama setiap malam. Bisnis walet ini merupakan bisnis besar di Bengkalis, Bagansiapiapi, Dumai, Selatpanjang dan bahkan di Pulau Sumatera.
The nest of the swallow bird is made from the solidified saliva of the bird, and this is a very expensive tonic delicacy in South East Asia, as well as other places such as China and Hong Kong. There are some swallow birds at Karimun Island, the some local people use the upper storeys of their houses as a place for the swallows to lay their nests so that these can be harvested and sold. The birds enter the house by a hole in the top floor (see photo) and they always return to the same house every evening. This is a very big business in Bengkalis as well as nearby places such as Bagansiapiapi, Dumai, Selatpanjang and even on Sumatra.
